Javed Akhtar Sparks 'Azaan' Row Again, Says It Causes Discomfort When Played On Loudspeakers

Should Azaan be played on loudspeakers or not? A couple of years ago, when Sonu Nigam had tweeted on this, it creared a furore in the nation. So much so, that it became a topic of national interests. Even after facing Fatwas and threats, the singer didn't back down and even shaved off his hair in response to a Muslim cleric who announced a reward of Rs 10 lakh to anyone who could tonsure him.

The controversy died down soon. However, it has been reignited once again, and this time because of lyricist Javed Akhtar's tweet.

Javed Akhar took to Twitter to say that 'Azaan' on a loudspeaker was haraam in India for almost fifty years. He also said that it causes discomfort to many people.

"In India for almost 50 yrs Azaan on the loudspeaker was HARAAM Then it became HaLAAL n so halaal that there is no end to it but there should be an end to it Azaan is fine but loudspeaker does cause of discomfort for others I hope that at least this time they will do it themselves"

A lot of people disagreed with his opinion.

 To this, Javed Akhar wrote:

For the unversed, Sonu Nigam had tweeted about the same in 2017. " "God bless everyone. I'm not a Muslim and I have to be woken up by the Azaan in the morning. When will this forced religiousness end in India," he wrote.

Even at that time, Javed Akhtar had said, "As far as I think, no matter if it’s a Masjid, Mandir, Church or Gurudwara, whatever is the place, do your prayers, but it shouldn’t disturb anyone else."
